Restoration Project
Text Box: The Fremont Soil and Water Conservation District has recently teamed with other partners to restore oak savannas in the Loess Hills. An oak savanna is an ecosystem with an overstory of primarily open-grown oaks, and an understory of grasses, sedges, and wildflowers, and was once very common throughout Iowa. Much of the forested land in the Loess Hills was originally savanna, that has developed a closed canopy due to fire suppression and/or discontinued grazing.
This project will provide 95% of the cost to restore an oak savanna on lands lying exclusively in the Waubonsie and Oak Ridge Special Landscape Areas (Fremont and Southern Mills County). This means that you could restore 10 acres of savanna for only $225 out-of-pocket!
