Seth Moore with Fremont Soil and Water Conservation District reviews the days activities with students from Farragut, Fremont Mills and Sidney High Schools.

Students assisted Terry Lewis and Linsey Barney  in planting trees at Pinky’s Glen park.

Activities

Derry Wolford and Andrea Rexroth talked to students about Bluebird habitat. Students placed Bluebird houses around Pinky’s Glen park.

Mark Boucher from DNR presented the aquatics program. He brought a variety of fish and helped the students learn to identify the fish.  Ashley Berkler of the US Fish and Wildlife Service taught the students what invertebrates exist in wetlands and how the environmental stress effects their populations.

On Wednesday, April 20th, 78 biology students from Sidney High School, Fremont Mills High School and Farragut High School met at Pinky's Glenn to celebrate Earth Day. Students learned about fish identification and bluebird houses, importance of tree planting, wetlands and restoration, and how to use global positioning systems. Each student who participated received a tee shirt that was provided by Fremont Soil and Water Conservation District, Fremont County Conservation Board and Farm Bureau. Lunch was prepared by Sidney Foods. Fremont County Conservation Board also helped purchase trees through the DNR Trees for Kids grant program and furnished steel posts, wire, and mulch for the trees.

Other people that made the Earth Day program possible were presenters of trees planting Linsey Barney from DNR and Terry Lewis from Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom and Fremont County Conservation Board, Andrea Rexroth from Fremont County Extension presented the GPS lesson, Mark Boucher from DNR brought a variety of fish and presented the Aquatics program, Ashley Berkler of the US Fish and Wildlife Service demonstrated the Wetlands program, Derry Wolford built Bluebird houses and presented, Dave Carter provided the Tabor fire truck to help with the watering of the trees. The day was organized by Seth Moore and countless others from the Fremont and Mills County Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
