Earth Day 2009 Sidney and Fremont-Mills High Schools |

On April 22nd, area high school students were invited to participate in an Earth Day Event put on by the District and Iowa Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom. The event took place at the Southern Loess Hills Interpretive Welcome Center near Percival. |
Students gathered at a public site, owned by the Corps of Engineers and managed by the Iowa DNR. The site had been planted with various nuts, including walnuts, acorns, hickories, and pecans. The students helped to identify the seedlings, and protect them from browsing critters. |

Activities |
David Carter, Soil Conservationist for the Mills County NRCS, taught the kids how to use the GPS unit. Mick Sandine, USACOE, talked about some of the changes that are currently taking place on the Missouri River. |
At the end of the day, the students helped to “clean up” the Interpretive Center wetland. They also did a little bit of landscaping in the front of the building. |
